Let’s face it, we’ve had a whole lot more time at home this year to spend time with the family. While lockdown has been hard for everyone, it’s also given us so much time to bond and spend together with the kids. Now we’re back to (mostly) normal with schools open again, and the work commute happening again, we might be missing that family bonding time again!
So we’ve come up with a list of fun, unconventional activities you can do plan to do with the kids at home, to continue what lockdown started: family fun, the way it’s meant to be:
1. Build your lounge into a fort, and have a family movie night
Complete with popcorn, cozy socks and some fairy lights, a movie night will be a sure way to enjoy some quality family time while still relaxing after a working week. Get the kids to construct the living room fort (think blankets, pillows and sheets!) that can transform your space from an everyday lounge, to a state-of-the-art home cinema. Cook up some popcorn, bring out the snacks and tune in to Netflix for a heartwarming family film. The kids will love the opportunity to build something and have fun at home, while you’ll love the chance to sit back and watch a feel-good film.
2. Got a backyard? Host a family Olympic Games
In light of Tokyo 2020 being pushed back a year, it might be time to host your own event instead. Bring out the backyard cricket, hopscotch or game of touch, and set up a whiteboard points system. Be sure to include games that favour skills from all members of the family and have a laugh as you all try something a bit different. Bonus points for the best costumes!
3. Pizza night
Everyone loves a good, homemade pizza – and it’s a great way for the kids to express themselves, and make their favourite food. Whip up a delicious homemade dough, and let everyone have a blast. Get the kids to pick their favourite toppings and be creative when they make their pizza design.
4. Start a vege garden
Get your green fingers working with a homegrown vege or herb garden. If you’ve got the outdoor space, planting a couple of veg is a great money-saver and family activity to maintain. If you’re a bit stuck for space, try planting a smaller herb garden for those fresh flavours (pizza toppings, anyone?). Gardening is a great activity that the kids can be ‘in charge’ of, with tangible results that they’ll be proud of. Plus, you can teach them about sustainable living at the same time!
5. Home Spa Afternoon
In need of some kid-friendly pampering? Why not recreate a mini-spa at home? Try some of these face mask recipes which are eatable too, and give them a go at home. Get the kids involved by painting each other’s faces, as an easy way to relax.
There are so many fun activities to do around the home when it’s raining, when in lockdown or when you just want a day at home. My kids come up with their own creative activities and it usually involves a messy experience.
